Tuesday Topic: 13 Ways to Stay Healthy this Holiday Season

The holiday season is busy and hectic, all too often making it a challenge to maintain our healthy lifestyle.  One gingerbread man too many can knock us out of our healthy groove and into a sugar-laden, spiraling rut.  Here are my tips for staying on track this year:

  1. Enjoying a few too many festive cocktails is easy.  If you know you’ll be splurging on drinks make sure to increase the amount of water you drink during the day.  Have a glass of water between each beverage and try to make smarter drink decisions by avoiding the super-sugary varieties.
  2. You’ll find plenty of homemade baked goods floating under your nose so just say no to store-bought treats.  Your taste buds will be much more satisfied if you choose to indulge in scrumptious treats made with love as opposed to those shrink-wrapped on a factory conveyor belt.
  3. If you know that you have a crazy busy week ahead make sure to schedule your workouts ahead of time.  That’s right, write them down in your planner and commit.
  4. Bring the healthy stuff and plan ahead for holiday parties. (See more of my potluck party tips here.)
  5. Focus on the holiday spirit by reminding yourself of what’s truly important during the holidays.   Try not to associate the season with splurging on treats that you “can only enjoy during the holidays.”  There are no reasons you can’t treat yourself every other month out of the year too!
  6. Regardless of what you did in the last hour, day, or week, you can always make the next decision a healthy one.  Don’t beat yourself up if you feel like you lost control and over-indulged, move on.  Healthy living is not all or nothing so if you fell off track for the day, recommit yourself right away.
  7. Stock your fridge with healthy convenience food and snacks.  You’ll be less likely to eat junk food out of convenience if you’ve planned ahead to make sure you have healthy options on hand.
  8. Tis’ the season to be busy and stay out late but make sure you are getting enough sleep.
  9. Beat holiday stress by making time to pamper yourself.  Take a hot bath, paint your nails all festive and sparkly, unwind by a crackling fire, drink copious amounts of hot tea, sniff some seasonal candles, and spend time watching Christmas movies on the couch under a mountain of blankets.
  10. Do everything in your power to avoid getting sick.  That should automatically include eating well, staying active, and avoiding stress.  If you don’t already, maybe consider taking a multivitamin this winter.
  11. Do less.  You don’t have to say yes to every holiday event and invitation that rolls your way.  It’s easy to go overboard and stretch ourselves too thing this time of year.  Focus your energy on the events that are most important to you and enjoy them more.
  12. Splurge on yourself.  Treat yourself to a gift that will encourage you to stay on track.  Buy some new workout gear or get a massage after the holidays wind down.
  13. Everything in moderation — including moderation sometimes too.

What will you be doing this holiday season to ensure that you maintain your healthy lifestyle?
